Early literacy is what children know about reading before they can read and write. Research shows that a child's early literacy skills develop during their first 5 years of life, years before they start school. A baby chewing on a book, a toddler turning the pages, a child asking to hear the same story over and over, these early experiences with books and language lay the groundwork for your child's success in learning to read.
As parents and caregivers, we can help our children become better readers by fostering an atmosphere that is fun and stimulating. Don't 'teach reading', just have fun and offer opportunities to read, be read to, sing, and listen. By talking, reading, and playing with your child you're doing more than just developing early literacy skills, you're also stimulating the growth of your child's brain that will become the building blocks for reading. It's a proven fact. Children who grow up in fun, interactive, and literacy rich environments develop the early literacy skills necessary to succeed in school.
Help your children develop early literacy skills now; this makes it easier for children to learn to read once they begin school. Five of the best ways to help your child get ready to read are:
Talking
singing
Reading
Writing
Playing
CRDL Storytimes will help your you and your child communicate better by developing their ability to describe things and events and tell stories. By attending CRDL Storytimes your child will gain an interest and enjoyment for books and reading. Your child will be able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words and learn the difference between letters, their names and their sounds. Your child will also recognize print, learn how to handle a book and how to follow the words on a page.

Your CRDL System is committed to helping young children in our community succeed in school. To help create young readers, we have developed a CRDL Daycare Outreach Program specifically designed to enhance and nurture early literacy skills in children up to 5 years old. Specially trained volunteers visit daycares and preschools throughout the library district to deliver individually designed story time events intended to: Teach and emphasize the different stages in learning vocabulary & teach and emphasize the different aspects of effectively delivering a story time to parents and caregivers.
Volunteers are trained and supplied with individually designed daycare kits that will be left at the daycares and preschools for them to use until their next visit.
We are currently looking for volunteers who are interested in helping children succeed in school. If this sounds like something you would like to do, please register below and join us on January 31st at Veterans Memorial Library.
